Interesting facts about Barcelona

  • National Geographic awarded Barcelona with the title of 'best beach city' but their beaches weren't actually used for leisure purposes until 1992 when the city hosted the Olympics, and the sand was shipped in from Egypt
  • On Average 150,000 people walk along La Rambla every single day
  • La Sagrada Familia (an iconic church) is still unfinished 130 years on from when it was started. The great pyramids of Giza only took 20 years to complete
  • Both Spanish and Catalan are spoken in Barcelona - with Catalan being used more widely
  • Drivers in Barcelona are considered amongst the worst in the world, with accidents happening in the city every 19 seconds! The metro is a much more efficient (and safer!) way to get around the city

Climate in Barcelona

In Barcelona, hot summers contrast with cool winters and in August, despite the shade in the tree lined boulevards, locals desert the city for the coastal resorts to escape the heat.  While the first temptation is to find a bar with tables outside in the sunshine and an ice cold glass of wine, a few days spent in the heat has most people wanting to head for somewhere cooler.  The beaches south of Barcelona at Castelldefels, Sitges and Vilanova are easy to get to by train, while further south towards Tarragona the Costa Daurada offers miles of beaches. Also The Costa Brava to the north offers many picturesque opportunities to lie back on the sand and work on that all important tan.

Getting around Barcelona

Barcelona’s centre is compact and easy to explore on foot. Bicycles are good way of getting around the Old City and the port and there's a good network of bike lanes across the city. The metro and bus systems are best for longer journeys. Cars can be a hindrance: there’s little parking and most of the city is subject to one-way systems.  Tourist offices provide a free street map, or there's a better-quality map with extra information for €1. Metro maps (ask for un plano/un plànol de metro) are available free at all metro stations; bus maps can be obtained from the main Oficines d’Informació Turística.Transportation in Barcelona is excellent, with public subways, buses, private taxis and tour buses. The subway system is easy to understand, and the fare-card machines are relatively self-explanatory. The touch-screen is available in the main world languages and the tickets can be paid for by credit card. The hop-on-hop-off tour bus provides three routes: Red line covers the northern part of Barcelona including the Sagrada Familia (departing from the Placa Catalunya); Blue line covers the southern part of the city including Montjuic and the port area; Green line runs during the summer months along the beach area just to the north/east of the city. Taxis are plentiful and not too pricey. Some drivers prefer you to have a business card from your hotel which includes the street address if you do not speak fluent Spanish or Catalan.

Nightlife in Barcelona

Barcelona is a city known for its vibrant and colourful nightlife. There's a huge variety of bars, pubs and clubs from tiny, cozy traditional Spanish bars to trendy, varied and sometimes spectacular clubs. Even if you aren't really a clubber at heart it's worth going out to at least one nightclub just to see what's on offer on your hen weekend in Barcelona. Remember, there are more and more "lounge" clubs springing up if you like to take your drinks whilst reclining!

In addition to the plethora of national delights on offer, this chic and metropolitan city has a rich fusion of other international influences so you can enjoy everything from Italian, Asian Thai, Indian, Mexican and many more.

Barcelona was a perfect choice - the weather was beautiful the whole weekend, the food and drink was amazing, and there was plenty to do to keep everyone occupied. We spent most evenings down on the beach, as there were plenty of bars to choose from. Our first booked activity was the Ice Bar, which everyone seemed to love! Once we got too cold, it was amazing to come out and just sit by the beach with a drink and warm up. We then moved to a bar further down and drank a magnum of champagne! Barcelona is the perfect spot for a hen party.
