Getting around Cologne

Much like any big German city, Cologne has a brilliantly efficient transport system, making it easier for our stags to get around via trams, buses or trains. Depending on how far you want to travel in the city limits, one or three day passes can be purchased for around a fiver. They've got something similar to  the Boris Bike system in place with Call A Bike, if you're after short journeys and sober enough to pedal! Taxis can be hailed down around any of the busier areas of the city, they don't have a bad reputation and they should all charge around  €1.30 per km.

What you need to know about nightlife in Cologne

Nightlife in Cologne

Nightlife in Cologne

The Germans here are hopping mad about their Kölsch... you'll find it in every bar, pub and club. You'll also find local custom in the more traditional bars and breweries is to bring you out a new glass before you've finished the last one, so it's rather easy to lose track of how much you're drinking! The waiter will keep tabs by marking your coaster, to stop the beer from coming (though we don't know why you would) leave your glass at least half full until you've asked for the bill or put your coaster on top of your empty glass. The opportunities for crawls in Cologne are never ending... you'll find traditional breweries, beerhalls, beer gardens, pubs, bars and clubs all over the city centre, with the alternative and live music scenes being a little further afield.

Eating in Cologne

Grabbing a bite to eat in Cologne is quite tough... as there are so many great choices! As it's a big city, you'll find a variety of different cuisines, from brewery Dinners to McDonalds and everything in between. The traditional dinners are quite different from the British diet, like Himmel und Äd mit Flönz; which is black pudding, mash, fried onions and apple sauce, or Sauerbraten a combo of a beef or horse joint with red cabbage and potato dumplings. It may sound a bit weird, but we can tell you from experience how amazing these meals are. Excellent before a night out on the town!

Things to see in Cologne

Bleibtreusee: Though it's nowhere near the coast in the North of Germany, don't let that stop you hitting the beach in the summer... head to Bleibtreusee lake, the local beach for some stunning views, sunbathing, beach side bars and bikini clad frauliens!
Escape rooms: Europe's newest, and possibly weirdest, trend - race against the clock to escape... or be locked in forever! Alright, maybe not forever but you get the jist. Crystal maze meets the ever so addictive puzzle phone games for an hour of clues, riddles and head scratchers.
Cologne Carnival: Bit of a bizarre tradition, but when it results in all day partying - we're not going to argue with it. Carnival season opens at 11 minutes past 11 on the 11th of November... it's suspended over the advent period, but kicks off again on the 6th of January through until the beginning of lent. The best week to go is the final week, where there's plenty of food, beer and some rather bizarre traditions and parades starring a fat farmer - Seine Deftigkeit.

4.5 Star Rating
Great city with a buzzing nightlife. Good selection of activities and night venues. Many options for pubs and several different nightlife areas to explore. The Adventure Room was great fun. I'd rate Cologne a 4.5 Only reason for not rating it a 5 out of 5 is because there was so much choice of areas to visit, it was hard to know where to start...
