Europe's capital of chaos (and also capital of Slovenia) is the latest contender to the Eastern Europe Stag Weekend scene... and it's not struggling to compete with the heavyweight stag destinations. Bordering Italy, Austria and Croatia, it's got the credentials to be the next big thing. Also boasting some epic water based activities like white water rafting, hydrospeeding and canyoning, and epic nightlife which will keep going as long as you do... all you need to do is try to keep up!

Not only is it a stunning location, both in the city and surrounding, but it's got some of the best white water rafting in Europe and some of the most mental nightlife we've ever seen. See what the Maximise team got up to on our trip to Ljubljana... not that we can remember everything!

Climate in Ljubljana

The weather in Ljubljana is a lot like the UK, so predicting it is a bit of a guessing game. Summer tends to have a few scorching hot days scattered about, while most winters will see some snow in the city, and guaranteed snow in the surrounding mountains.

Getting around Ljubljana

The best public transport in the city is the bus system, it's well serviced with a modern fleet running numerous lines across the city, although it can become congested during rush hour. To ride the bus you need to buy an Urbana Card, which is similar to an Oyster Card, from any Urbanomat at a bus station. Taxis are easy to come by in the city and tend to hang around the bigger clubs in the evenings, and the local cabbies don't have a reputation for ripping tourists off - but just incase, no fare within the city should set you back more than 10 to 15 euros.

Nightlife in Ljubljana

Ljubljana is home to some of the best nightlife we've had the pleasure of experiencing! Kick off your night with a bar crawl where you can choose anything from modern hipster joints to traditional breweries. As it's a stag do you'll likely be wanting to stop off at the strip club like we did... and you'll be left impressed. Or speechless. Depends on the show. There's some awesome clubs in the city centre, all within walking distance (although we'd recommend a cab back after a bottle of Absolut) and we can sort you out with entry to the very best of them. How we've got this far without mentioning Metelkova we're not sure, but you need to stop off there. It's an autonomous (otherwise known as lawless) region in the city centre where beer is around a euro, you can drink it on the streets, cocktails are lethal (we'd recommend the adios motherfucker) and there's an adult jungle gym you can play on to your heart's content. Think your favourite teenage hangout on acid and you've got Metelkova.

Eating in Ljubljana

The Slovenians take their grub seriously. Meat and carbs, with a side of meat and carbs. And a lot of mushrooms. And more food than you could possibly eat in one sitting seems to be their version of a starter. We also tried their local hangover cure, Kefir, and it does actually do the trick... though we're not sure about the taste. If you don't fancy the local food, then there's a huge range of other modern restaurants, chains and takeaways.

Things to see in Ljubljana

Metelkova City: Ljubljana's worst kept secret, MetelKova used to be a military barracks, but is now filled with bars, mental nightclubs and the first adult jungle gym we've ever seen.. Beer is around a euro a can and you can drink it on the streets, which is good because the streets are stunningly decorated with local artist's graffiti. One not to miss if you're looking for a unique crawl on your stag do.
Zmavc: Hipster central, this area is ideal for those looking for an alternative scene on stag weekends. Also renowned for having some of the best coffee in Europe. Your hangover will thank you.
Dragon Bridge: So bridges might not be the first thing on your agenda for a stag do (we're guessing beer is), but Game of Thrones fans will want to get a selfie with the dragons that guard the city.
Hot Horse: The locals favourite treat comes from a little place in the city's main park (Tivoli)... horse burgers. Not for the faint of stomach, but if you're wanting to eat like the locals while you're away it's definitely worth a visit.
Atlantis: The city's biggest waterpark with 14 pools, thermal baths, slides and saunas. Sweat out the booze or just nap poolside with a beer!

Good fun and cheap. Plenty of bars and clubs; it helped to have a rep out there that knew where to take us. The daytime events were good too. I personally enjoyed the shooting and the night club, but I think most people enjoyed the bars the most.
